Understanding Psychology and Educational Psychology
Psychology which in the old term is called psychology comes from the English word psycology. the word psycology is two root words derived from the word greek (greek), namely one) psyche which means soul; two) logos which means science. So, psychology literally means psychology.
Psychology is more associated with the life of the human organism. In this relationship, psychology is defined as a science that seeks to understand human behavior, the reasons and the way they do things, and also understand how these creatures think and feel [2]
Bruno (1987) divides the notion of psychology into three parts which are in principle interconnected. First, psychology is the study (education) of the "spirit". Second, psychology is the science of "mental life". third, psychology is the science of the "behavior" of organisms.
Chaplin (1972) in the dictionary of psychology defines psychology as the science of human and animal behavior, as well as the investigation of organisms in all their variety and complexity when reacting to currents and changes in surroundings and social events that change the environment. [3]
"Psychology" comes from the Greek words "psyche" which means soul, and "logos" which means science. So etymologically (according to the meaning of the word) psychology means the study of the soul, both regarding its various symptoms, processes and background, or it is called psychology.
Talking about the soul, first we must be able to distinguish between life and soul. Life is physical power that depends on physical life and causes bodily actions, namely actions caused by the learning process. For example: instinct, reflex, lust and so on. If the body dies, so is the life.
While the soul is the spiritual life force which is abstract in nature, which becomes the activator and regulator for all personal behaviors of higher animals and humans. Personal dressing is an act as a result of a learning process made possible by physical, spiritual, social and environmental conditions. The learning process is a process to improve personality by trying to get new understanding, new values, and new skills, so that he can do more success, in dealing with contradictions in life. So the soul contains understandings, cultural values and skills. [4]
The definition of psychology above shows the variety of opinions of psychologists. This difference stems from the different points of departure for experts in studying and discussing this complex soul life. And from this understanding, at least it can be concluded that psychology is a science that studies all individual behavior and actions, where the individual cannot be separated from his environment. [5]
Education from the word "educate", then this word gets the prefix me so that it becomes "educate", which means maintaining and giving training. In maintaining and giving character and intelligence [6]. Furthermore, "education" according to KBBI is a process of changing attitudes and behavior of a person or group in an effort to mature humans through teaching and training efforts. [7]
Educational Psychology is a psychological discipline that investigates psychological problems that occur in the world of education. Meanwhile, according to the American encyclopedia, the notion of educational psychology is a more principled science in the teaching process that is involved with discoveries and applying principles and ways to increase efficiency in education. [8]
From the above uarian, we can know the notion of psychology and the notion of education itself. Throughout or while we still argue that psychology is a science that seeks to investigate all aspects of the basic personality of human behavior, both physical and spiritual, both theoretically and By looking at its use in practice, both individually and in relation to other humans or their environment, perhaps we will say that 'educational psychology' is actually included in psychology, and does not need to be questioned or separated into a separate scientific discipline.
[9] Educational psychology can be concluded that educational psychology is a branch of psychology which in its analysis and research emphasizes the growth and development of children, both physical and mental, which are closely related in educational issues, especially those that affect the learning process and success.
